What Are Produce Shares?

A Produce Share (Produce share examples) allows you to purchase fresh, local and regional in-season vegetables and herbs directly from our Farmers and Growers gardens every other week. You will taste some of Virginia's finest produce freshly harvested each season and without waiting in line! If you need a smaller portion share size, please email us, as we are looking to offer smaller shares for couples and singles.

Is There Fruit in My Produce Shares?

Yes, there will be seasonal fruit included in the shares when it is made available from the Farms. For example in the early summer months, we will include a pint or quart of fresh blueberries or strawberries, peaches, grapes, pears and figs in the summer, and a few apples in the Fall. We will be offering a Fruit Share in 2010 in the Summer to include a variety of favorites and a bit more!

What is Random or Estimated Weight?

Most packaged Meats including Seasonal Turkeys, Farm Butter, Produce and a few other items are "random weight." The reason for this is that these items are not weighed until your order is received and prepared by the Farm or Producer; your subtotal in your Shopping Cart will be different than your final total. Meats are ordered by the package, but charged by the pound. Your total meat price is the weight of the meat x the price. Meat packages contain the estimated weight in the description.

Produce, Butter, and other items sold under the "estimated weight" factor are ordered by the number of pounds desired; pounds ordered are to be in whole numbers not halves. If you are interested in purchasing Produce by the Bushel, please email us for a quote as we understand some folks like to can or freeze in large quantities.

What Type of Payment Is Accepted?

We are able to accept checks from local banking institutions or credit unions payable when your order is placed, and needs to be mailed prior to your delivery. Our business pick up sites do not handle our payment transactions. Credit Card payments can be processed through PayPal, however, we may need to send a final Invoice the day prior to your delivery or pick up date since your Final Invoice may represent the total of all Random Weight or Estimated Weight items.

What If I Miss My Pick Up?

If you know in advance that you will be out of town on vacation, or have a conflicting schedule, please make arrangments with a friend, neighbor, or another family member to pick up your scheduled order. It's a great way to introduce someone to local fresh foods! You could also instruct your friend to donate your share to a local Church or Shelter in your town, as we are certain there are many folks that would enjoy receiving this gift! Otherwise, please email us one week prior to your scheduled absence, so that we can hold off picking up your items and delivering your order, as we do not have the ability to store your items. Should you not notify us in advance, we will instruct the delivery location to discard your share or perishable order as they see appropriate.

Can I Substitute Items in My Produce Share?

In general, we don't allow substitutions as we will purchase the appropriate amount of produce for each subscriber share. A suitable substitution for one person may result in an unsuitable substitution for another. That being said, allergies are accepted as a logical explanation for requesting a substitution, however, please alert us to these facts at the time you are placing your initial order. Please include any and all fruit, vegetables, honey, and/or nut varieties that you or your family member are allergic to.
